Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said the world was on its way to Central Otago, with the fifth biennial Audi quattro Winter Games NZ set to open in less than four weeks.

(opening on - 25 Aug)

“These games are huge for Central Otago. They are one of the world’s top five winter sports competitions, and the only one in the southern hemisphere.

“Interestingly they are also New Zealand’s largest recurring sports event and have an international reputation for being relaxed, friendly and uniquely kiwi.

“The Government has seen the potential in this event committing $3 million in funding from the Major Events Development Fund this year and for 2015.

“These games generate excellent international exposure for our region, showcasing some of our most spectacular scenery.

“The Games also deliver a significant economic boost as many of the athletes choose to stay for an extended period of time to train in New Zealand.

“Winter Games New Zealand is a great home-grown event. It fits perfectly with the Government's strategy of investing in events that deliver economic results and successfully showcase New Zealand internationally as a desirable visitor destination."
