KiwiBuild has been a massive disappointment to the Wanaka community with the scheme failing to help the local families who need it most, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says.
“There have been so few prospective first-home buyers entering the ballot for ten KiwiBuild house and land packages in the Northlake suburb of Wanaka that the developer has asked to extend the ballot period by 10 days.
“Housing Minister Phil Twyford has frequently boasted his KiwiBuild scheme would be helping first-home buyers who needed it most, but he’s only recently defined KiwiBuild as not being for low-income families.
“Many families are rightly disappointed as the price for these homes in Wanaka are out of their league.
“In late September Mr Twyford announced the Northlake development with much fanfare.
“But Mr Twyford failed to check whether the demand existed for two or three-bedroom houses in Wanaka at the price point he has set.
“This is a fiasco of the highest order, making a complete mockery of the Government’s much-touted KiwiBuild programme.
“What’s worse is the failure of this project, which raised the expectations of many young Wanaka families, has left them out in the cold and no closer to home ownership in this town.”
