A decision by the Labour-led Government to axe 24/7 police stations in Wanaka and Alexandra is unfair on our communities and will lead to more victims, MP for Waitaki Jacqui Dean says.
“When National was in Government we committed $503 million to a Safer Communities Package which included a target of 95 per cent of New Zealanders living with 25km of a 24/7 police base. This Government has now dropped that target and tried to keep it quiet.
“The 24/7 bases included Wanaka and Alexandra. The Government needs to explain why it’s stripping away resources from these areas.
“This is a backward step for these communities, particularly at a time when population growth and increased visitor numbers means extra policing should be a priority.
“This is short-sighted and will have serious ramifications for public safety in these busy tourist towns.
“The Police Minister should come to Wanaka and Alexandra and explain to these communities why he made this decision.
“National is the party of law and order. We believe New Zealanders have the right to feel safe and protected at all times.”
