Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says with construction underway on Tekapo’s new youth hostel, the time is right to put a focus on youth tourism.
Travellers aged 18-24 account for around 11 percent of New Zealand’s holiday arrivals and visitor spend.
Mrs Dean says the $9 million youth hostel will be a major drawcard for the savvy youth market.
“The value of these visitors should not be underestimated. They stay longer than other visitors, travel more widely and pump money into adventure and recreational activity providers.
“We want to offer these young people an authentic experience here in the Mackenzie District, so they are more likely to return later in life and bring others with them.
“Their influence is significant as they share their experiences on social media while travelling. A memorable experience at the hostel in Tekapo and surrounding areas will result in some great exposure for the region.
“The local tourism industry can tap into a market that has the potential to grow further and bring more money into the region. The prospect of having this modern, purpose built facility open for business by the end of the year is truly exciting.”
