Chinese New Year a golden time for regional tourism
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says it’s likely to be a golden week for tourism operators around the Otago region as Chinese tourists flood into the area for Chinese New Year celebrations.
“This is an exciting time of year for our tourism sector, with Chinese New Year holiday celebrations kicking off on Saturday (28-1) and set to continue into the month of February.
“More and more Chinese tourists are choosing to travel independently, shifting away from group tours and this is benefitting regions like Wanaka, Central and North Otago.
“These areas can offer a unique experience for tourists, which in many cases encourages visitors to stay longer.
“The Government has responded to the opportunities on offer for regional tourism growth by designing a new package of measures to make it easier for Chinese travellers to visit New Zealand.
“Along with this a new strategic alliance between Air New Zealand and Air China is making New Zealand a more attractive destination for Chinese travellers.
“China is our second largest source of overseas visitor arrivals after Australia, with 377,840 visitors to New Zealand from China in the 12 months to 31 March 2016.
“However, I believe this is only the tip of the iceberg and there is a lot more potential for growth in the years to come. The opportunities are certainly very exciting for our region.”
