New Regional Research Institute a major boost for Central Otago
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says the establishment of a new Regional Research Institute in Alexandra, is a major coup for the people of the area.
“The provision of close to $15 million for the Centre for Space Science Technology will have incredible benefits for the Central Otago community, bringing economic growth and development through new research activity.
“This centre will put Central Otago on the map in terms of space science research and I’m delighted that this substantial amount of Government funding has been allocated to Central Otago to allow it to proceed.
“It’s so positive seeing this money coming to a smaller community like this and it’s a recognition that the Government values growth and innovation in the regions and wants to support and promote it.
“Regional Research Institutes were announced as part of Budget 2015 and 24 proposals, from 16 locations, were received.
“The Alexandra proposal is one of only two to have gained funding and this highlights what a wonderful opportunity Central Otago and its people have been given.
“The other Regional Research Institute, the New Zealand Institute of Viticulture and Oenology was announced earlier this month, is in located in Malborough.
“The Government will provide funding of up to $14.7 million over four years for the new institute with additional funding from industry, and it will operate as a private, independently governed organisation.”
