Tourism infrastructure funding for Tarras, Tekapo and Geraldine
Waitaki MP and Parliamentary Private Secretary for Tourism Jacqui Dean says she is delighted over $780,000 in Government funding, for local tourism infrastructure projects, will come to the region.
"This funding comes from successful local authority bids for central government funding to help pay for important tourism infrastructure projects.
“Funding for toilets at Lake Tekapo, Geraldine and Tarras has been approved and will make a huge difference to these communities in terms of the facilities that they provide for visitors,” Mrs Dean says.
“The Mackenzie District Council has successfully bid for $405,000 from the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund to help co-fund the building of toilets at Lake Tekapo. The Timarui District Council has secured $131,000 in co-funding for toilets at Cox Street, Geraldine, and the Central Otago District Council gets $247,280 in co-funding for toilets at Tarras township.
“The tourism sector around this region is experiencing remarkable growth, with visitor numbers and tourist spending up around most areas.
“This is great news for economic growth and in terms of creating new job opportunities, but it also means we need to keep investing in infrastructure to support ongoing expansion.
"Budget 2016 allocated $12 million over four years for the National-led Government’s Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund which co-funds core facilities used by tourists and enhances the experience they have while visiting.
