Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said the farming sector was certainly pulling its weight, with latest export figures showing volumes are at the highest levels since records began in 1990.

“To achieve the highest export levels in over 25 years is quite impressive and shows just how productive the farming sector across the Waitaki electorate and around the country has become.

“Statistics New Zealand figures show that export volumes rose 10 percent in the June 2016 quarter, with dairy farmers playing a major role, with volumes up 13 percent.

“This shows that despite lower prices farmers haven’t retrenched and are still maintaining, and in some cases increasing, production levels.

“Meat, forestry, and fruit export volumes across the country also rose this quarter and once again reflects the significant contribution that the rural sector is making to our economy.”
