Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says she will attend Friday's protest at Westpac's proposed closure of its Fairlie branch.

Mrs Dean hosted a public meeting in the town on Monday to hear first hand of the concerns of local residents and business owners.

"Monday's meeting showed the depth of concern across the community. From elderly people to businesses to the tourism industry - this decision has serious implications.

"For me, attending the protest is a way to show my support for Fairlie, and surrounding towns like Lake Tekapo, that will be impacted by the closure. I understand the significance of losing this service and believe the case for retaining the branch is legitimate and must be made now.

"I have been and will continue to be in contact with Westpac management as they work towards a  final decision.

"I think is fair to say that Fairlie won't give up without a fight and I'll support them all the way."
