Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she was right behind the Maniototo community as it stepped up its opposition to the proposed closure of its only bank.

“I think the ``Save Our Bank'' protest on Friday is a brilliant idea and one that will again send a clear message to Westpac officials that this closure would be devastating for the town.

“I think Westpac has been surprised at the level of opposition to its bank closure proposal and if they thought that Ranfurly was a sleepy little town that would take this decision lying down, they were very much mistaken.

“It’s crucial that the community communicates what this closure will mean to the area. I think Friday's protest will be effective in doing that and I congratulate the people of the Maniototo on keeping up the fight.

“I felt the passion of the people at the public meeting that I called on Friday and I will continue to do all that I can to ensure that their message gets through to Westpac decision makers.”

Mrs Dean said she was also working with the Fairlie community, who faced a similar threat.
