MP Welcomes more support for regional tourism
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says the Government is taking positive steps to increase support for regional tourism.
Associate Tourism Minister Hon Paula Bennett today announced that a change to the Tourism Growth Partnership (TGP), will see half of the $8 million annual fund made available exclusively for projects in the regions.
The change will help get innovative businesses, that increase productivity in the tourism sector, up and running.
The announcement comes on the same day that applications open for the $3 million annual Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grand Fund.
Mrs Dean says the Government wants region's like the Mackenzie District to prosper.
"The Mackenzie District is seeing record visitor numbers, which is fantastic for the local economy.
However, having a small rating base does pose challenges in developing infrastructure that caters for those visitors.
"We want to support the most urgent and necessary projects so that tourism potential can be realised, therefore its important that any opportunities to apply for funding are taken up."
Applications for the Regional Mid-sized Facilities Grant close on 15 September, with funding decisions expected to be made in mid-October.
