Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean has concerns at a proposal from Westpac to close its Fairlie branch.

It is understood the bank may close 19 branches nationwide, including Fairlie. A decision on their future is likely to be made by the end of September with closures expected by the end of October.

Mrs Dean says it's an unsettling time for staff and the wider community.

"While I accept that banking services are being delivered in different ways, there will undoubtedly be an impact on the farming community, local businesses and families who rely on the personal service of going into the branch.

"I am particularly concerned about the impact this closure would have on older residents who rely on this branch to manage their finances.

"I will hold an open forum on Monday 22 August at the Fairlie Heartlands Centre at 64 Main Street from 10.30am to 11.30am. This will give people an opportunity to air any concerns they may have and I will then reflect these thoughts to Westpac directly."
