Lagoon clean-up continues

Friday, July 15, 2016

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean has welcomed the news of further funding of $517,000 to restore South Canterbury’s Wainono Lagoon.

Mrs Dean said the lagoon and its surrounding wetlands have long been recognised as meeting the criteria of internationally significant wetlands deserving of restoration and that the funds together with a collaborative and practical approach from those interested in the lagoon's welfare should see it return to it's original self.

"These waters have been degraded over a long period of time. Their restoration won't occur overnight but it is happening."

The $517,000 injection, the figure was announced on Thursday by Government Minister Nick Smith and Maori Party deputy Marama Fox, comes from the Te Mana o Te Wai Fund to provide $5 million over two years in support of iwi and hapū-led initiatives to improve local freshwater quality.

Mrs Fox said local iwi Te Rūnanga o Waihao, freshwater advocates for many decades, will lead the project supported by Environment Canterbury.
