Wine and apple industries star export performers
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean has welcomed new primary sector export figures which showed solid growth, with the wine and apple industries star performers.
"The Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries earlier this month shows export revenue is expected to reach $36.7 billion in the year to June 2016, a rise of $1 billion from a year ago.
"Horticulture has grown by a whopping 20 percent from June 2015 figures and is estimated to exceed $5 billion for the first time by June 2016.
“This is extremely positive for the sector and reinforces the significance of the wine and pipfruit industries around Central Otago.
“These sectors, and the growers involved in them, have weathered tough times over the years, but have stuck with their industries and are now reaping the rewards.
“This positive growth is exciting for our wine and apple industries and also bodes well for the Central Otago region as a whole, boosting economic growth and providing job opportunities.”
Overall the Ministry for Primary Industries expected total growth in primary sector export revenue of just under 20 percent over the next four years which showed the primary sector as a whole was in good health, Mrs Dean said.
