Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said an increase in jobs in the Wanaka area was great news for people living in the Upper Clutha area.

“Research by NZ employment agency SEEK shows that the Wanaka employment market is displaying healthy job growth.

“Job opportunities in the area reflect the strength of the property and tourism market across the Central Lakes area, with industries like construction, trades and services, hospitality and tourism and retail booming in the past 12 months.

“The fact that tourism is growing and developing in Wanaka is obviously having spin-offs for the wider community and as a result more jobs are being advertised.

“The development of a new residential aged care facility in Wanaka is also creating employment, both through the construction stage and now with 40 staff, from care workers and nurses, to kitchen assistants and administration staff, required for the business.

“While the construction of Wanaka’s new sports facility will be another boost, with the new ski season also creating employment opportunities and bringing more people into the area.

“It’s exciting and positive to see Wanaka going ahead and doing so well and it shows that growth and positive economic development is not limited purely to the big cities.”
