Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she was very aware of the lack of public toilets in Tarras and the impact it was having on the local school and the wider community.

“Clearly it is not appropriate for the school to be affected in this way and a solution needs to be be found.

“I have met with several locals in regard this issue and have conveyed their concerns to my tourism colleagues at Parliament.

“I am very pleased with the new $12 million Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Fund, announced in Budget 2016.

“This funding will assist communities like Tarras in developing facilities such as public toilets to cope with increasing visitor numbers.

“This funding is targeted to support tourism growth and is a positive step by Government in addressing issues like we are seeing in places like Tarras.

“Tourism is thriving and the benefits are flowing back into local communities.

"However, I acknowledge that this growth is also putting pressure on some of our smaller communities and that’s why this funding is a positive step forward.”
