Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she strongly encouraged Central Otago conservation groups to apply for Government funding to support local projects.

“$4.5 million is available in the latest funding round of the DOC Community Fund.

“Securing some of this funding could provide a real boost for community-led conservation groups around the Central Otago area and would make a big difference in protecting the environment.

“Our natural heritage is so important and the work that Central Otago conservation groups do in protecting special areas, promoting the value of conservation and encouraging community support is significant.

“This fund was set up in 2014 to distribute $26 million over four years to inspire and enable community-led conservation projects around New Zealand and it would be fantastic if some funding could come Central Otago’s way.

“Groups applying for funding will need to submit an expression of interest showing how their project fits with the purpose of the fund by 1 July. Following the assessment of expressions of interest successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application.”
