Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she felt for the people of Millers Flat with the looming closure of their local store.

“I understand that the future of the Teviot Valley store is uncertain after Foodstuffs announced it was pulling out of the area.

“I’m concerned for the local community in the wake of this news. This is Millers Flat's only shop and it has been a part of the community for many decades.

“This store provides an important service, is a focal point for the community and is also a meeting place for the locals.

“Foodstuff’s appear to have made their decision to withdraw for financial reasons, but I would suggest there’s also an element of social responsibility here as well.

“As the town rallies to address this issue, I would like to offer them my support.

“The store’s building is owned by a community trust and I’m hopeful a way forward for the people of Millers Flat can be found.”
