Waitaki MP and Parliamentary Private Secretary for Tourism Jacqui Dean said Central Otago deserved its place as one of the country’s top tourist spots.

“The region has made it, for the first time, on to the country’s list of top ten destinations to visit, in a major international and domestic poll run by Experience Oz + NZ.

“Central Otago joins places like Fiordland and Queenstown on the top ten list and this is a major shot in the arm for all those involved in tourism in the region.

“As a first time entrant in the poll, this is a great success for Central Otago and shows that this beautiful region offers exactly what travellers desire in a holiday destination.

"The top 10 list also included Taranaki, Nelson, Dunedin, Hanmer Springs and Whanganui.

“The month long survey received close to 7000 votes from a mixed audience of New Zealand, Australian and international respondents.

“This poll is significant because of the absence of several of the country’s major cities and reflects that tourists are keen to immerse themselves more in regional New Zealand, with Central Otago fitting the bill.

“It’s exciting that Central Otago has been identified as a tourist hotspot and shows that the region’s tourism growth is only set to continue.”
