Emphasis on Mandarin-speaking staff a positive step
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she applauded moves by Cardrona Alpine Resort to employ Mandarin-speaking staff.
“We’re already seeing huge increases in Chinese visitor numbers and the interest in destinations like Wanaka is only expected to increase.
“I’m very impressed that Cardrona is responding to our changing international markets and getting prepared for the winter influx of skiers and snowboarders, particularly from China.
“Part of the success in welcoming international visitors to this country is being able to communicate with them in their native tongue – anything that we can do to ensure international visitors have an enjoyable and memorable stay in our country is important.
“Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world and for the last few years China has been New Zealand's fastest growing market for international visitors.
“Understanding the society and culture of this nation is becoming increasingly important as China overtakes our more traditional visitor markets.
“To support this, in figures just released by Tourism New Zealand, China has recorded another month of growth with total arrivals to New Zealand up 27.8 per cent and holiday arrivals up 32.2 per cent for the year ending March.
“China is New Zealand’s second-largest and fastest growing tourist market,” Mrs Dean said.
“Last year, over 355,000 Chinese citizens visited New Zealand and contributed over $1.6 billion to our economy.”
