Cromwell Housing Development crucial for growth

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she welcomed plans for a major Cromwell housing development which she said would help in addressing the shortage of seasonal worker accommodation in the area.

“I commend the Central Otago District Council and the Queenstown developers for embarking on this successful collaboration which will have far reaching implications for the whole region.

“A 2015 Central Otago Labour Market Governance Group survey, funded by the Government, revealed that low-cost, high-density housing was needed, particularly in Cromwell and Alexandra.

“This project is an excellent step towards addressing this issue and in future-proofing the region for positive economic growth.

“The horticulture sector is on record as predicting strong growth in the next five years, with an already acute shortage of affordable accommodation for seasonal workers likely to be a barrier to the growth of these industries.

“That’s why this proposal is so crucial. The developers should be congratulated for their vision, with the Central Otago District Council is right in supporting this and any other suitable projects which may come forward.”
