Gov't Keen to Support CO Film Industry

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she hoped that Government support for Central Otago’s burgeoning film industry would continue to encourage growth in the sector.

“The economic benefits which the screen production industry can bring to Central Otago are huge and the Government is keen to recognise that.

“Support for the sector is available through the New Zealand Screen Production Grant, which aims to encourage medium to large budget productions to film in places like Central Otago.

“Administered by the New Zealand Film Commission, on behalf of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), the grant provides a financial incentive for the production of foreign and domestic large budget films, television and other format productions here.

“In the meantime, Film Otago Southland is doing some great work in promoting the Central Otago region and working with potential clients with some exciting projects in the wings.

“Their records show that in the past financial year 185 film productions, including TV commercials and feature films, were shot in Otago and Southland.

“These are exciting statistics and I’m delighted that as a Government we are doing our bit to help the people of Central Otago as this industry goes from strength to strength.

"We have such a fantastic array of professionals associated with film available in our region, along with the area having a reputation for being film-friendly and offering dynamic landscapes, which include historic towns and vineyards.”
