Lagarosiphon work important for Lake Wanaka

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she welcomed the release of a new 10-year lagarosiphon management plan for Lake Wanaka.

“Just released by the Lake Wanaka lagarosiphon management committee, in conjunction with Land Information New Zealand, the strategy is another step forward in fighting this invasive lake weed.

“I think the Wanaka community will be more than pleased to see this action being taken. Potential new control methods are being considered and there appears to be a real commitment to managing this weed and its spread.

“Many hours and much funding has already been invested in Lake Wanaka, but that doesn’t mean the momentum should change with the objective now to reduce lagarosiphon in Lake Wanaka by 2025.

“The work being undertaken in Lake Wanaka is also crucial for other areas, like Lake Dunstan and Lake Wakatipu, who’re also struggling with Lagarosiphon and looking at effective ways of managing the problem.

“Government support has been on-going and is essential as we work with Central Otago communities in tackling lagarosiphon’s spread.”
