Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said a fresh direction for the Central Otago Winegrowers Association would future proof the industry in the region.

“I’m pleased that the association is looking to the future and working towards delivering better results for its members and the region as a whole.”

The association has recently established a general manager’s job and employed a person to fill the role.

“This is an innovative and exciting step for the association and will allow the wine industry to move forward and meet any new opportunities as they arise.

“Wine production has become an integral part of the Central Otago economy.

“Local growers should be congratulated for having the foresight to work at improving their results and delivering better returns for the region as a whole.

“National is focused on both growing and diversifying the economy which is why we’re glad to see such positivty in the viticulture industry.

“New Zealand wine has established itself as a major commodity after exports increased by 10 per cent in volume and value to a record $1.33 billion in the year to June."
