Dean supports retention of TVNZ news team in the South

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she had no shame in being parochial when it came to news-based television services in the Otago region.

“I’m quite happy to put my hand up and support TVNZ's two Dunedin-based staff whose positions could be disestablished.

“Let’s face it, we need as much television coverage of the Otago region as we can possibly get.

“Our news and current affairs shows are already predominantly Auckland-focussed and it’s about time that TVNZ management realised that life doesn’t stop at the Bombay Hills.

“This is about providing news coverage which reflects the country and its communities and I simply can’t believe that a reduction in staffing levels won’t impact on the coverage that we get here in the South.”

Mrs Dean said she also supported the actions of local mayors who had also defended local news coverage.

“Some things are worth fighting for – and I’d suggest that this issue is one of them.”
