Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said police across the Otago region should be congratulated on new statistics which show there have been almost one million fewer personal and household crimes in New Zealand since 2008.

“These are amazing results and reflect what a great job our police are doing in protecting us and our families from loss and harm.

“People can sleep easy knowing that police are working hard to protect their property and keep them safe.

“Almost one million fewer personal and household crimes in this country, since 2008, is a great statistic and it should be celebrated.

“Otago police do a great job in protecting communities across our region, with some often working alone in remote and rural stations.

“Their families too deserve recognition as they support them in their work and wait at home while husbands, partners and dads go out and fight crime.

“We are lucky to have such a great police force in the Otago region, with statistics like this showing what a fantastic job they and their colleagues are doing."
