Worker accommodation a game changer in Central Otago
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said plans by a Central Otago stonefruit operator to develop worker accommodation was positive and she encouraged others within the sector to consider similar plans to future proof their businesses.
“Seasonal worker accommodation is a major issue facing the region’s horticultural sector with predictions it could stymie growth of the cherry, pipfruit and stonefruit industries in years to come.
“That’s why an application to build workers’ accommodation for 40 people, by Le Fresh Stonefruit Ltd of Earnscleugh, is so timely.
“I congratulate the initiative of the company in answering the need for worker accommodation and I hope that they are supported by the Central Otago District Council in their application.
“With over half of the seasonal staff who work in the region coming from overseas, this development will certainly ensure the company is in a better position to attract staff in the future.
"I encourage other operators to also consider the benefits of this kind of investment.”
