Waitaki MP and Parliamentary Private Secretary for Tourism Jacqui Dean said she wanted to congratulate everyone involved in Central Otago’s tourism industry as visitor arrivals to New Zealand recently topped 3 million.

“In Central Otago international visitor numbers reached 28,021 for the year ended March 2015, according to Statistics NZ, while spending by overseas people in the region to March 2014 was $23 million.

“Visitor arrivals to New Zealand surpassed 3 million for the first time in the July 2015 year, according to figures from Statistics New Zealand. The record-breaking 3,002,982 visitors this year was 7 percent higher than the July 2014 year.

“This is a significant achievement for tourism in this country and it’s a milestone that should be celebrated by everyone involved.

“From the bus drivers who transport visitors around the region, to the reception staff at our hotels, the ski instructors on our fields and the guides along the Central Otago Rail Trail, everyone has contributed in some way to building this country’s reputation as a tourist destination.

“What’s even more exciting is that indications are that these numbers will continue to grow, bringing even more benefits to places like Central Otago.

“The Government values the benefits tourism brings to regions like Central Otago. We have already invested an unprecedented $600m in tourism and promotion as part of our plan to build a diversified and robust economy.”
