Boost for Cycle Trails
The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail and the Central Trails Trust will receive a financial boost as the Government continues to invest in maintaining trail quality.
National MP Jacqui Dean said she was pleased two cycle trails within the Waitaki electorate had been given the grants as the two were both local and national assets.
“I've ridden both trails and I remain impressed with what they offer. This funding boost is great news and will further enhance the integrity for our cycle trails," she said.
"The $66,575 for Alps 2 Ocean funding will be used for trail safety and surface enhancements along with the installation of barriers, the widening of a bridge on the trail and the laying gravel on some parts of the trail.
"Centrals $10,744 funding will go towards the installation of safety barriers on the Roxburgh Gorge trail and storm damage repairs on the Clutha Gold trail.
“Cycle Trails have proven to be hugely popular and they do attract tourists, create jobs and boost economic growth in the regions. Recent reports indicate more than 1,200 jobs have been created in support of the trails while further data shows 125,000 people used New Zealand Cycle Trails in the month of January alone," the MP said.
Mrs Dean said she was keen to ensure the Cycle Trails were maintained to a high standard so both locals and tourists could continue to benefit from them.
“The Government has set aside $8 million over four years to maintain and enhance the quality of New Zealand Cycle Trails."
