Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean has praised the work undertaken by Waitaki's high volunteer numbers.

The MP said only Northland and the East Coast's had higher volunteer figures.

"Volunteer week is upon us so it's timely to celebrate our many volunteers and the contribution they make to our communities. Here in the Waitaki electorate we are very fortunate as around 20 percent of residents give their time, skills and resources to causes important to them."

Mrs Dean said the electorate's unsung heroes freely donated their on time and energy in support of a range of non-profit organisations, groups and institutions including youth organisations, social services, sports, charities and many more.

"Our region’s economy is also supported by the charitable nature of our locals. Latest figures from Statistics New Zealand show New Zealand has 97,000 non-profit organisations which, combined with the volunteer labour force, contribute 4.9 per cent to our GDP.

"To our electorates almost 9700 volunteers your efforts are truly appreciated. Thank you and keep up the excellent work!" Mrs Dean said.
