Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she would like to see Government support for rental companies as they work together on a code of best practice to educate tourist drivers.

“I’m delighted that rental car companies have initiated this action, their support in helping improve safety on our roads is crucial.

“Already the Government has extended and fast-tracked a road safety programme for tourists, with work due to be completed by July 1.

“But having rental car companies come on board and support these actions will go a long way towards improving road safety in this country. It’s a really positive step forward.

“Rental car companies met in Auckland on Monday and agreed to develop the code as a matter of urgency and they are to be commended.

“Increased screening of driver experience, more pre-arrival information about New Zealand driving conditions and more information sharing between rental operators are all important actions which will make a huge difference.

“I’d like to see the Government supporting rental car companies as they work on this code of practice - by working together we can improve safety on our roads and work towards addressing the concerns that many New Zealanders have.”
