Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said plans to align Otago and Southland’s transport strategy was a stellar idea which would give the two provinces a stronger voice in Wellington.

“I support this initiative by Environment Southland and the Otago Regional Council to join forces and prepare a single document looking at the transport challenges facing both regions and the best way to align work programmes for roading.

“By working together as a united force both provinces could improve access to funding and save money by sharing resources and working together.

“When competing for funding with big regions like Auckland, it makes sense to me for Otago and Southland to work together to gain some traction.

“Both regions are intrinsically linked through tourism and agriculture, with roading and transport a crucial part of that equation.”
