Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she was delighted Government changes to work visa rules were helping to ease labour shortages in Central Otago.

“I’m pleased that the Government has been able to facilitate this initiative, which clearly provides a positive solution to a local issue here in our region.

“It’s this kind of Central Government response, to local employment needs, which will ultimately promote regional economic growth and prosperity in places like Central Otago.

“The Government’s decision to allow work visa rules changes to relieve the seasonal labour shortage around fruit and grape crops this season has been enthusiastically received by the industry in.

“Having a greater number of staff available takes the pressure off local orchardists and allows them to focus on harvesting fruit during peak periods.

“This in turn provides them with seasonal labour security and in future will allow them to expand their businesses and offer more jobs.''
