Parliamentary Private Secretary to Tourism and Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said an extension to the length of time Chinese nationals can work for one employer in New Zealand will be beneficial for tourism operators across Central Otago.

“This change will make it far more effective for operators to employ Chinese workers for up to six months instead of three.

“Not only will it give employers a better return on any training, but it will also allow Chinese staff more time to fit in, gain experience and do their best for the operators involved.

“This change will also make New Zealand more internationally competitive for the China visitor market, which is now the second biggest source of visitors after Australia.

“We want to encourage more Chinese visitors to Central Otago, employing Chinese-speaking staff within the tourism industry is certainly a step in the right direction with workers with Chinese language skills highly sought after.

“The Government has listened to the tourism sector and made these changes and I’m hopeful tourism operators will take advantage of the opportunities on offer.”
