Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said improving access to overseas markets would have huge benefits for Central Otago exporters.

“Local exporters work hard to grow the best in export produce – it’s up to the Government to ensure that the markets are there for these businesses to take advantage of them.

“To create more jobs and boost incomes in New Zealand, National is improving access to many overseas markets.

“We have recently concluded free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Korea, the sixth largest export destination for our goods and services.

“Accessing the Korean market has previously been expensive, with kiwi exporters paying $229 million a year in duties to get their products into that market.

“Under this agreement, they stand to save about $65 million in the first year alone.

“This is great news for Central Otago exporters, allowing them to expand into the Korean market, earn more and ultimately employ more staff.

“A FTA signed by the Government with Taiwan last year is already benefitting Central Otago cherry growers and has the potential to grow.”
