New alcohol limits will save lives
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she hoped new lower breath and blood alcohol limits, set to take effect today, would save lives on Central Otago roads.
From today (December 1), the alcohol limit will lower from 400 micrograms, to 250mcg per litre of breath for drivers over 20 and the blood alcohol limit reduces from 80mg to 50mg. The limit for those under 20 stays at zero.
“Unfortunately we’re still seeing too much carnage and death on roads in this region, much of it related to speed and excess alcohol.
“The Government is determined to bring the road toll down, with this week’s introduction of lower adult breath and blood alcohol limits targeted at making our roads safer and saving lives.
“As we approach summer and the festive season, we want people to stay safe on the roads.
“Central Otago is a hotpot for tourists and visitors at this time of year, police will be out in force across the country again this summer so speeding and drink drivers should beware.”
