Go Team Cromwell!
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said she applauded the town of Cromwell on their ingenious promotional idea of entering the town in the Tour of Southland.
“I’ll certainly be supporting Team Cromwell when it competes in this iconic cycling race next week (Nov2) and I think local business people should be given a pat on the back for coming up with this idea to promote the town.
“The entry is the culmination of some superb sponsorship from about 20 businesses in the town, who have seen this sporting event as a way to sell Cromwell as a tourist, holiday and cycling town to visit.
“And it’s not a silly idea, when you consider that the Southland tour is seen as the best race in the country and attracts amazing media coverage and is televised to about 75 countries around the world, including daily updates on Sky Sport.
“It’s ideas like this that can set towns apart and I’m delighted that Cromwell has taken this idea and run with it. They’ll certainly be getting my support as the tour winds its way around Southland and Central Otago next week.
"It’s also wonderful that local schools and the Cromwell and District Promotion Group was behind the team.”
Mrs Dean said she had also heard that Team Cromwell cycling jerseys were for sale and she said she would proudly wear one if the team was successful in next week’s tour.
