Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says news that NASA will return to Wanaka later this year reflects the significant work of the local community in supporting the project.
"This is really huge for Wanaka and is indicative of the great support and encouragement that the community has given this team over time.
"The NASA team has now made a long term commitment to the region and with this comes the potential for significant investment, which will benefit the local economy.
"It's estimated the project injected over US $1 million into both the local and national economy in 2015 alone, so this gives an indication of the scale of the investment on offer.
"The project also provides an exciting opportunity to attract new businesses and investment to the area over the proposed ten-year agreement period.
"I am delighted to welcome NASA back to Wanaka. They have made a wonderful contribution to the Wanaka community and I look forward to their fascinating research continuing in the years to come."
