Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says she is shocked about the discovery of 26 live Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs in a box of imported shoes in Oamaru.

“The shoes were purchased from eBay and easily slipped through the border. Fortunately, the purchaser did the right thing, containing them and alerting MPI’s hotline.

“A Stink bug outbreak could cost the country more than $4billion dollars and would be catastrophic for our horticulture industry.

"After experiencing first-hand the devastation from the Micoplasma Bovis outbreak, I am truly stunned the Government has not done more to protect our boarders.

“Labour and New Zealand First talked tough about biosecurity throughout the election campaign, but they’ve failed to deliver.

“MPI only has two sniffer dogs trained for stink bugs, and with Christmas just around the corner online shopping is in overdrive, increasing the risk of a significant BMSB incursion.

"I blame this failure on a shortage of dog handlers due to an alleged toxic culture within the detector dog management team in Auckland.

“I just hope the Biosecurity Minister is able to sort out his act and that of MPI before they allow a very real threat like this to impact on our country's economy.
