The Ministry of Education needs to get Wanaka students to school by sorting bus transport issues immediately, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says.
“A lack of school bus transport in the Upper Clutha is effectively denying local children the right to an education.
“When you’ve got school staff having to drive around and pick children up off the side of the road, five year-olds sitting three to a seat and the bus contractor saying ‘things are not running well,’ it’s obvious there are some serious capacity problems.
“I think it’s appalling that instead of getting on with the business of education, principals are having to worry about getting children transported to school, and in some cases students are starting their school day late because there isn’t a bus with room to take them.
“The Ministry needs to wake up and get on with the job of providing enough buses to meet local needs and it needs to get it sorted immediately.”
