Price cuts on Air New Zealand flights to and from Timaru will make the Mackenzie District more attractive to domestic travellers, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says.
“I’ve long talked about the importance of domestic tourism to the Mackenzie District and in particular its potential to boost business in the shoulder and off-seasons.
“There’s no doubt that the region’s infrastructure has taken a pounding in recent years from increasing numbers of international visitors during peak season, but there’s room for growth in the quieter months.
“The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail, ski fields and hot pools are wonderful attractions, and with Earth & Sky’s new Tekapo headquarters nearing completion, the timing couldn’t be better.
"Having a higher flow of visitors year round is ideal. It makes it easier for businesses to invest in their operation and helps to create and sustain jobs.
“I often hear people saying that visiting Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo is on their ‘bucket list’ and with cheaper flights into Timaru that trip will become more realistic for many New Zealanders.”
